Winchester, NH – The Valenti Modified Racing Series thundered their way into Monadnock Speedway on August 25th for their eleventh race of the season. This would be the third and final stop at the high banked quarter mile track. Considered to be the home track to Cameron Sontag and Sontag Motorsports, expectations were high for a Top 5 run. First time out at Monadnock in the 2018 produced a 5th place finish and the second race showed a disappointing 16th place finish. Fresh off his first week of college, Cameron was ready for business. The #13 James Monroe Wire and Cable Corporation modified would be 8th quickest in both practice sessions. Car owner Steve Sontag would draw a favorable number in the tire draw and also would give Cameron the pole position in the second heat race. Cameron would jump out to a sizable lead in the heat race and then conserve the tires for the feature. While collecting his first heat race win in his MRS career, it would also give Cameron his best feature starting position of the season. It was time for the feature, Richard Savary would start on the pole and Sontag would setting in behind him for the first half of the race. A couple of restarts would shuffle Cameron back but he would ride in the Top 5 most of the race. Falling back to seventh, a two car spin would occur in front of Cameron. Able to avoid the wreck, Sontag would move up to 5th on the next restart. With 19 laps to go, it was time to hold on for another Top 5. Unfortunately that would not be the case. With only 2 laps to go, the #76 would try to drive his way into turn one for the 5th position and making contact with Sontag’s left rear tire, sending both cars spinning to the top of turn 2. Cameron would bring the car to the pits only to have the crew call it a night with a broken left rear shock. What looked to be a Top 5 and Top 10 for the #13 and #76 turned into a 18th and 20th place finish for the two Rookie of the Year contenders. Proving they have no problem running with the top drivers in the MRS, Sontag looks to accelerate a great showing into success for the remainder of the season. With 5 races remaining over the next 7 weeks, Sontag currently sits 7th in the points and is leading the Rookie of the Year standings. We’d like to thank our sponsors; James Monroe Wire and Cable Corporation, Earth Solutions, and NIS Service for the continued support throughout the season. The next race is August 31st at Stafford Motor Speedway. We hope to see you there!
